I had never done a climb as long or steep as this, so I did not know what to expect. I got rid of anything I wasn't using and anything I could do without. I even only filled one of my water bottles and ate all my food! Each thing on its own is small, but together all makes a difference. I say load as much stuff as you can on your bike and go up the biggest hill you can find and then do that every day for as many days as you can. Then see how you feel and ask yourself do i really need this toaster!!Less is best:)Richie Fingerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06534832631675742515noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4553651708112912484.post-64575455310650270422011-08-31T00:16:04.741+01:002011-08-31T00:16:04.741+01:00Hey Richie, what an adventure! I am off on a tour of the dolomites so have great vested interest in your weight considerations. You had a lot of gear, was it 40kg? Are you finding it noticeably easier after shifting the 3kg, or was it stuff you just were not using at all…. I'm thinking if bike +rider = 100kg, half a kg for water would be negligible, thought that's easy to say from my sofa!

Bon journeeSitting Snughttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05559156129161261492noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4553651708112912484.post-78431115942167243792011-08-21T19:28:25.009+01:002011-08-21T19:28:25.009+01:00hey richie, we arrived in lisbon after a few excel...hey richie, we arrived in lisbon after a few excellent days in san sebastian. we had no chance to stay in biarritz for a few days ( french holidays means full campsites and no place for 2 guys with a tent without any reservation... )and so we moved on to san sebastian in the same night. we walked across the border between france and spain to the next train station in spain and ( of course ) missed the last train to san sebastian... but we finally arrived there a few hours later. the following days there were great, good wheater and excellent parties. lisbon is a amazing city and we are staying here now for 5 days.we hope that you are still enjoying your trip. greets from the two german guys from paris, stefan and manuel.stefan hieltscherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14867015094147216620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4553651708112912484.post-41798368194148239002011-08-20T16:52:17.347+01:002011-08-20T16:52:17.347+01:00Ha Ha! I read Stevens' book about 5 years ago - just saw it on a library shelf and then spent the next few months saying to friends things like "... just took a pistol and a poncho...", "...had to face mountain lions...", "...people had never seen a bike before and threw rocks...", and "... I thought the penny farthing was a bit of a joke, but...".

I am a keen cyclist and mechanic, I love the idea of your trip, I will follow it with fascination.

All the very best!
